About us
The UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) is the UK Government’s response to the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention called for the development of national strategies and action plans to identify, conserve and protect biological diversity. The UKBAP describes the biological resources of the UK and provides detailed plans for conservation of these resources, at national and devolved levels. Action plans for the most threatened species and habitats have been set out to aid recovery, and reporting rounds show how the UKBAP has contributed to the UK’s progress towards the significant reduction of biodiversity loss called for by the CBD.
Biodiversity Action Plans also exist at regional and local scales and are implemented through local BAP partnerships. The targets within these BAPs often require scientific research to provide underpinning information. Science can also be used to evaluate the outcomes of BAP-related actions. However, local BAP partners do not always have the capacity to undertake the required research to achieve BAP targets.
The BAP Science Services project is being funded by Wessex Water and aims to:
(1) Work with LBAP partners in the Wessex area of SW England to identify their key science capacity needs in relation to BAP delivery.
(2) Develop and deliver a range of free bespoke training events and workshops for LBAP organisations based on their identified science needs.
(3) Develop a ‘one-stop-shop’ web-based inventory of academic researchers, facilities and events in the region.
(4) Produce and disseminate a ‘lessons learnt’ evaluation of the project.
